Nylon 66 has high mechanical strength, stiffness, heat and wear resistance, and also has good creep resistance. Due to its impact strength and mechanical damping ability, it is well suited for machining on automatic lathes.
Nylon is often used in gears, bushings, and plastic bearings because of its inherent low-friction properties. It is not the slipperiest plastic available if low friction is the only consideration, however, its high performance in other mechanical/thermal/properties make it a good choice for parts that could see a lot of wear.
Nylon can be extruded (melted and forced through a die) and is also suitable for both injection moulding and 3D printing.
It has a high melting temperature, making it an excellent substitute for metal in high-temperature environments (e.g., under the bonnet of a vehicle).
Nylon’s downside is that is has relatively low-impact strength compared to other commonly used plastics.
Polypropylene
Polypropylene is less absorbent than other plastics.
It is widely used in the food industry as it doesn’t mould or deteriorate in the presence of bacteria or other elements.
Although not as sturdy a Nylon, it is unlikely to shatter and will take significant damage prior to breaking.
Polypropylene is lightweight and very flexible.
Acetal
Acetal has high durability due to its abrasion and corrosion resistance, and therefore can be found in a wide variety of construction applications. Some of the most notable uses includes conveyors, gears, pulleys, rollers, bearings, bushings, cams, valves, seals, gear wheels, fasteners and much more.
In the automotive world, you can find Acetal in many parts including vehicle fuel sender units, power windows =, door locks, turn signals and vehicle tanks.
Acetal is immensely versatile and a key material in many objects and tools we use daily.
Polyethylene
Polyethylene has good resistance to alcohols, dilute alkalis and acids.
It has limited resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons, mineral oils, oxidizing agents and halogenated hydrocarbons.
It is used widely in the food industry for making items such as plastic bags.
Acrylic
Acrylic is a clear polymer.
Mainly used in the point of display industry where a clear finish is required.
Multiflex TPE
Used widely in glass clamping and protection.
TPE is commonly used to make suspension bushings for automotive applications because of its greater resistance to deformation when compared to regular rubber bushings.
Thermoplastics have experienced growth in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry due to the function, cost effectiveness and adaptability to modify plastic resins into a variety of covers, fans and housings.
